The International Municipal Signal Association

IMSA, International Municipal Signal Association, is the leading resource for information and education for the public safety industry.

With origins dating back to 1896, IMSA is the oldest known association of its kind, known first as the International Association of Fire and Police Telegraph Superintendents. Though its name has changed, and size has grown over the many years since its beginning, its purpose remains largely the same; to keep professionals in the field up-to-date on proper procedures and informed of new products and developments. In the early 1900’s, the association began developing standards and specifications for the industry including wire, cable, fire alarm boxes and the size of manhole covers.

In its beginnings, the association’s membership was small and consisted mostly of those residing in the eastern United States. Over the 100 years since, membership has grown to include professionals through the United States, across Canada and many across the world. Now well-known and recognized for their dedication to the field of public safety, IMSA has grown to develop long standing relationships with local, professional organizations globally.

In 1937, the name was officially changed to the International Municipal Signal Association and in 1982, began educational programs and certifications for public safety professionals. To date, IMSA has issued over 100,000 certificates in public safety to members and non-members alike. For individuals looking to advance their careers, improve their knowledge or enter the field of public safety, IMSA offers a number of courses relevant to today’s professionals including, Fire Alarm Monitoring, Public Safety Telecommunications, Fiber Optics for ITS, Roadway Lighting, Sign and Pavement Marking and Traffic Signal Inspection, just to name a few.

By its dedication to providing quality certification programs and supplying members with the latest education and information, IMSA continues to improve the field of public safety for both industry professionals and the communities they serve.
